Spain Day 11 - Delta d’Ebre

Early up as the sky was blue again and we couldn’t waste it! Back to the same lagoons as yesterday with lots more birds and lots more flamingoes! With yesterday being more sedentary we both fancied a walk and wandered between lagoons and rice fields that are currently drained and being ploughed ready for parking.

We had coffee at the cafe by the Aire and then left for Fangar hoping to see the dunes. Whilst google suggested this might be 40 mins it l took much longer as we stopped regularly to climb ‘mirador’ hides, enjoying the sight of a kingfisher darting up the canals or to staring at nearby flamingoes.

We swung past a campsite which was large, but quiet and thought we’d keep it in mind for possibly staying at later, and a couple of town Aires, although they weren’t very appealing. And went to Lidl to stock up on essentials as the fridge was looking bare.

Eventually when we got to Fangar we were met with a huge beach made of soft sand and the occasional seashell. We walked maybe half way to the lighthouse to get a feel for the dunes that make up Catalonia’s only ‘desert’, but at around 4km each way we decided it was late in the day to do the whole walk so paddled back (just me obviously G made sure he kept dry!).

The campsite won, so we headed back that way pausing for more birding and to watch a row of burning palm trees from a distance… definitely not something that was supposed to happen, fire service in attendance. Picked up some cheap fuel (1.34€) too - so G was happy!

The campsite is very pleasant, only ten mins from last nights stay but we have facilities here! We chose a pitch at the end of the row where we watched the sun go down whilst drinking gin. Bliss! Time for one last walk before dinner in the van , more wine and some photo sorting…. What a day!! Really relaxed, blue sky end to end and getting easier to imagine the coats going away at some point!
