Spain Day 12 - Playa Eucaliptus - Morella
More blue skies! Perfect temperature warm in the sun but with a cold breeze. Hard to do anything but get out of bed and get outside straight away. The campsite has access to eucalyptis beach … but only if you wade across a channel of water. Meant G had to get his feet wet, actually paddling, unheard of! Worth the chill though … at the other side of the channel was miles of soft sand beach and not another person in sight. The sun was warm and we walked 2km or so along the sand until we could join a road to walk back inland. Our only company was a very sad decaying giant turtle on the beach and a few gulls and terns flying around. Peaceful and perfect.
Google would have it that there was an inland path parallel with the beach, however, despite signs suggesting vehicles may use it, it was definitely under six inches or so of water so we turn inland to walk the road back. It soon became obvious that although this was a tiny road it was used by numerous large lorries heading to the salt works at the end of the spit so there was a lot of jumping on verges. Definitely not as peaceful as the beach.
Back at the campsite we had our first outdoor meal as brunch was needed and the sun shone. Tucked out of the breeze it was lovely and hard to pack up and move on afterwards.
Before driving elsewhere we thought we’d drive further down the road to the spit that the lorries were heading for. There were several car parks along its length so we chose the last one then walked further along the spit for a bit. There were still plenty of lorries but more space to avoid them and plenty of kite surfers and other walkers making the most of the breezy sunshine.
We didn’t have time to walk all the way to the end of the road (and not sure what there would be other than the salt factory) so we turn back for one last look at the lagoon from the final hide we pass and get our best view of flamingoes yet. Graham’s technique of using a camera on the lens of the binoculars has great results.
Graham fancies visiting the mountain town of Morella, so we head inland for 90 mins or so climbing steadily though pine covered slopes until the sight of the town makes us both gasp with surprise. It’s a medieval town, enclosed by walls and with a large castle at its highest point and looks like something from a story book.
As light is fading, we head to the aire just outside of the town where we’ll overnight before visiting tomorrow. The castle looks great from our pitch as the sun comes down, but the temperature drops fast with it …. Think it’s going to be a cold one!
