Spain Day 3: Lekeitio - Zarautz
Good night’s sleep. Aside from routine police patrols it was very quiet, and having decided it was a hot water bottle night we were snug and warm.
Bright morning, if still chilly, so we walked down to explore the town which was beautiful. Fishing harbour lined with restaurants (mostly closed for winter) and beautiful views along the coast and out to a small island. The island is accessible by causeway at low time but timings didn’t work for us, so a coffee, a grocery pick up and a drive along the coast to the lighthouse for a picnic.
The lighthouse itself can only be reached via a cafe … which was closed. However, still worth the trip as views from the headland were amazing. There was also some sort of disused, graffiti covered industrial area which was interesting. Lots of wandering and picturing taking before retiring to the van for a late lunch just in time to escape the return of the rain.
After lunch decided to drive to Zarautz. Closer to San Sebastián and has a full facilities campsite so we’ve shelled out on a sea view pitch whilst we make the most of having a shower block!
First half of the drive was stunning with the road hugging the coast line with hills on one side and the sea on the other it felt like Highway 1 at times. Then inland for our first tiny stretch of Spanish motorway and a 2.30€ toll.
Campsite is in a great cliff top location with lots of packed-in seasonal caravans. But the sea view pitches are incredible and the view from ours will be breathtaking when the rain stops. Super clean facilities, fantastic showers!
Easy afternoon and evening as the rain didn’t let up until late but G made the steep walk down to the beach whilst I cooked, turns out it was worth the steps with great views and a disused mine to wander around. Slight delay to dinner when draining the pasta became tipping it on the floor! Better luck with the second batch. By the time dark came the rain had stopped and the view was sparkly and quiet magical. The combined sounds of the sea, a nearby scops owl and the feeling of being properly clean and shiny made this a star stop.
