Day 4: Following the coast to Ribasedella

Woke to grey skies but that was cancelled out by the pleasure of hearing the sea. Quiet in the car park with only two other van present. As it’s such a nice spot we’ve decided to stop here this morning to do Daisy’s proof-reading between short trips our on foot. There’s a lot of coming and going with people stopping for a quick walk to look out from the rocks before heading off again. At one point two divers with harpoons show up and enter the sea for an hour or so but return empty handed The weather is certainly changeable we see sun from time to time but also rain and even a sizeable hailstorm. As it’s gets nearer lunchtime more and more cars arrive to lunch at the restaurant and paperwork complete, we leave a heaving carpark and start off west.

On the ‘slow road’ again which starts off pretty much adjacent to the motorway but drives through small towns and villages we’d otherwise miss.

Crossing an estuary we divert down to a stunning outlet at Pechon, where we get out to admire the views before completing a loop that takes us back to our original road.

A little further along we head to the Bufones de Arenillas , some of the many ‘geysers’ along this coast. The road is narrow and feels ‘wrong’ but we get to a small parking area from where it’s around a mile to the cliff tops. The geysers are in fact ‘blow holes’ in the cliffs where in stormy weather the sea is forced out in columns but today they are just thundering gaps where the sea crashes beneath the ground.

We retrace our steps driving towards blue skies and sun and we head back to our main route stopping beside Playa de San Antolin for another breathtaking view of sea and river before continuing further west to Ribadesella where we've found the rarity of an open campsite! We’ve passed plenty today but it’s still closed season here it seems and not seen an open one yet! We’re give a pitch close to the laundry and have the option to cable up to a socket next to the washing machines which requires a two pin adapter and a polarity switcher to work but good to have the speed of the electric kettle for a change and may well get the fan heater on later!!

There are a fair number of caravans a motor homes here but everyone is inside with doors and windows shut and it’s  probable the quietest night yet. Time to crack open our first bottle of red this holiday… good to know than we can’t be moved on!

Cumulative Mileage:

Overnight: Camping Playa Sauces (ACSI rate with electric)
