Day 26 - Last day on the West coast
As perfect as van mornings get! Bright sunshine, views of the sea, total peace but for birdsong! Warm but with a cool breeze, it’s what vans were made for!
We sit around til lunchtime enjoying the calm. A walk on the beautiful beaches, tea, toast, a chat with a visiting green frog… a couple of dog walkers pass but otherwise just us . The other van is still here but spends his time in the sea and aside from a brief chat about water feels like we are very much alone. Guarding this one, may return just like our neighbour on his third visit in 10 years!
Eventually decide we should leave on a high and hit the road. A short failed attempt to see some nearby petroglyphs and we are back on the coast, taking a side road to Larino lighthouse … can’t have enough lighthouses it seems! Oh my goodness what a good call!! The lighthouse itself is a smart hotel and there’s a small paid aire beside it, but we definitely need to move a little further so not for us this time! We pull over into a small layby and decide to walk along the wooden walkway to see the beach…, omg it’s huge, the whitest softest sand stunning big turquoise rolling waves and there is miles of it …. and just us!!
It’s possibly one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. We have to sit and watch the waves which are huge, frothy and mesmerising.
When we get back to the van we put the kettle on and have tea and cake on a bench overlooking the lighthouse. It’s warm and sunny and perfect!
However we have still only driven about 5 miles today! Whilst the weather is so good we are going to stick to the coast for a little longer. The feel does change a little as we pass through bigger towns the as an estuary filled with some sort of fish farms opens out we are suddenly on the south of France! And when we reach Muros it really does feel like an expensive boating harbour, unlike anything we’ve seen so far. Well worth a park up and wander. It has a massive harbour and port with a fishing boats based in the port and a huge number of leisure boats in the harbour.
We have a coffee in a very cool bar with art nouveau features and some ropey taste in music. Still amazes how cheap this is when you are used to £5 Starbucks!
Then back on the road. We really need a toilet ‘service’ and all the campsites appear to be closed but I notice there’s a service point at an Eroski in Noia so that’s next. Whilst Graham services the van and tops up the diesel (1.32) I have great fun nosing round the ‘hypermarket’ and trying not to carried away!
By the time we leave the supermarket the sun is starting to set and we need to find somewhere to stay, Noia is near our road inland tomorrow so I look for somewhere nearby and discover an estuary spot five mins away that hasn’t been reviewed in two years. Worth a look … another fantastic find! Tucked away and completely silent we watch the sunset before tucking into some of the new groceries. No worries about street lamps tonight!
